WhatsApp Business app vs API: what a small business in India actually needs
Someone has told you your business needs 'the WhatsApp API'. Maybe it does. Here is what the free app does, what the paid platform adds, what Meta now charges per message in India, and how to tell which one fits.
The WhatsApp Business app is free and built for small businesses messaging customers from one device. The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, is for sending at scale through software, and Meta charges per message: in India from 1 October 2026, ₹0.8631 for a marketing message, ₹0.115 for a utility or authentication one, and ₹0.115 for service replies beyond 1,000 a month. Most small businesses need the free app.

WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business Platform (API)
The app is a free phone app for small businesses: a business profile, a catalogue, greeting and away messages, all run by a person from one device. The Platform is a paid service for sending messages at scale from software - order updates, one-time passwords, campaigns - usually set up through a provider. WhatsApp itself draws the line at small versus medium and large.

Meta raised India's marketing rate on 1 January 2026, and from 1 October 2026 it also charges for utility messages sent inside an open customer service window. India also has volume tiers for utility and authentication messages, for large senders.
What would the WhatsApp API cost you a month?
Enter roughly how many messages of each kind you would send in a month. The estimate applies Meta's India rates and the 1,000 free service messages, and shows Meta's charge alone; a provider's fee comes on top. On the free app, the same messages cost nothing, sent by hand.
The 24-hour customer service window, explained
When a customer messages or calls your business, a 24-hour window opens, and it resets with each message they send. Inside it, the business can send ordinary replies. Outside it, the API can only send templates Meta has approved, charged by category. That is why getting the customer to message you first matters on the API.
Meta also describes a free entry point window of up to 7 days when a customer starts the chat from a click-to-WhatsApp ad on Android or iOS. Details in its pricing documentation.
Which do you need: the app or the API?
If one or two people answer customers from a phone, the free app does the job, and the money is better spent on getting customers to message you in the first place. The API earns its fees when software has to send thousands of updates or one-time passwords, or when several agents share one number through a support system.
The free app is enough when
- a person answers every chat
- you send updates and reminders by hand
- your catalogue and greeting message cover the basics
The API is worth it when
- your website or app must message every order automatically
- you send one-time passwords
- several agents work one number through a support tool
Either way, people have to find your WhatsApp first. A WhatsApp business card puts a chat button one tap away from the card you hand over, and our free WhatsApp link generator makes a wa.me link with a message filled in. Reminders that stop no-shows are worked through in how to reduce no-shows.
WhatsApp app and API: questions
Is the WhatsApp Business app free?
Yes. WhatsApp describes the Business app as free to download and free to use, built for small businesses talking to customers from a single device, with limited customisation and few integrations. The paid side is the WhatsApp Business Platform, the "API".

What changed in WhatsApp API pricing on 1 October 2026?
Two things Meta had kept free started being charged. Service messages - replies inside the 24-hour window a customer opens - are now charged after 1,000 free a month per business phone number. Do I need a provider to use the WhatsApp API?
Usually. WhatsApp's FAQ says direct access needs a developer, because it means calling its APIs, and that most businesses work with one of its approved Business Solution Providers instead. A provider sets up the account, the templates and the software that sends messages.

What is the customer service window?
When a customer messages or calls your business, a 24-hour window opens. Meta's documentation says businesses can send free-form messages only while that window is open; outside it, only pre-approved templates, which are charged by category.
