UPI Business Account vs Personal UPI: P2PM, Limits, Fees
Which UPI account is yours

UPI business account or personal UPI? What a small business should use

Plenty of Indian businesses take UPI into a personal savings account. NPCI has a name and a rule for that. Here is what the three kinds of UPI account are, where the lines sit, and what changes when you cross one.

Many small businesses take UPI into a personal account, and NPCI has a category for that: P2PM, for small merchants paid by QR, with no fee up to ₹1 lakh a month. Above that for three months running, the bank moves you to a merchant (P2M) account, where payments above ₹2,000 carry the 2026 fee once it starts. Daily limits are set by NPCI and your bank.

The three kinds of UPI account a payment can land in

Every UPI payment goes to an account in one of three categories: a person (P2P), a small merchant paid into a personal account (P2PM), or a merchant with a business UPI account (P2M). The category, not the app or the QR design, decides whether the 2026 merchant fee can apply.

Person to person (P2P)

Money between individuals, including to your own other accounts. The FAQ says P2P stays free for both payer and receiver, at any amount.

Small merchant (P2PM)

A specialised category "created by NPCI to support small vendors receiving payments directly into their own personal bank accounts". Zero fee up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR codes.

Merchant (P2M)

A business UPI account from a bank or payment company. Payments up to ₹2,000 stay free; above that, the 2026 fee of 0.4%, capped at ₹300, applies once it starts.

Your last three months

Will your bank move you to a merchant account? A three-month check

NPCI's FAQ says banks check the UPI money a P2PM merchant receives each month, and move the merchant to the P2M category after three consecutive months above ₹1 lakh. Enter what came in by UPI in each of your last three months to see which side of that line you are on.

Count UPI receipts from customers only, not money you moved between your own accounts.

ResultStays P2PMOne month above ₹1 lakh out of three. The rule needs three in a row, so the zero-fee category holds.
Months above ₹1 lakh1 of 3, not in a row of three

This checks the rule as the FAQ's question 29 states it. Your bank applies it, and only your bank can tell you which category your UPI ID is in today.

How much can come in

UPI limits for a business: what decides them

UPI limits are daily caps set by NPCI and each bank for safety, not charges. The Finance Ministry says they generally run from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh a day depending on the kind of payment. A large payment can also stop at the customer's end, because their bank limits how much they can send.

  • The general range. Daily limits prescribed by banks and NPCI "generally ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh depending on the transaction category" are risk safeguards, the Ministry says, not charging thresholds.
  • Higher for some merchants. All India Radio reported that from September 2025 NPCI allowed merchant payments of up to ₹10 lakh a day in selected verified categories, with the person-to-person limit unchanged at ₹1 lakh a day.
  • The payer's side. Your customer's bank caps what they can send in a day, so a large advance may need splitting across days or a different method.
  • Your bank's page decides. Each bank publishes its own UPI limits within NPCI's maximums. Check yours before you quote a large amount payable by UPI.
Personal or merchant

When a merchant UPI account is worth having

A personal account in the P2PM category is the cheapest way to take UPI while a business is small: no fee at all up to ₹1 lakh a month. A merchant account starts to make sense when you need business records kept apart from personal money, or when you are past the line anyway.

Stay on a personal account while

  • UPI receipts sit comfortably under ₹1 lakh a month
  • you are a freelancer, tutor, home baker or a one-person practice
  • your bank is happy with business receipts in that account

Move to a merchant account when

  • you are above ₹1 lakh most months and will be moved anyway
  • you want business money and personal money in separate books
  • you want what a merchant account adds - ask your bank or payment app what that is, from the name customers see to reports and a soundbox

Either way, the Finance Ministry's FAQ says existing QR codes and soundboxes keep working and do not need replacing. What the 2026 fee would cost on your larger payments, by category, is worked out in UPI charges for merchants. Whether you also need a payment gateway is in UPI QR vs payment link vs gateway.

FAQ

UPI accounts for business: questions

Can I use my personal UPI ID for business payments?

NPCI has a category for exactly that: P2PM, for small vendors receiving payments by UPI QR straight into their own personal bank account. It carries no merchant fee while receipts stay within ₹1 lakh a month. Your bank's account terms still apply, so ask it whether your account suits regular business receipts.

What is P2PM in UPI?

Person-to-Person-Merchant. NPCI's FAQ describes it as a specialised account category for small vendors receiving payments directly into their own personal bank accounts. Under it, small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR codes have a mandatory zero merchant fee.

What happens if my UPI receipts go above ₹1 lakh a month?

One busy month changes nothing. The FAQ says banks watch P2PM merchants, and a merchant whose UPI receipts pass ₹1 lakh a month for three consecutive months is moved to the merchant (P2M) category, where payments above ₹2,000 carry the 2026 fee once it starts.

What is the UPI limit for a business account?

There is no one number. The Finance Ministry says daily limits set by banks and NPCI generally range from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh depending on the transaction category, and NPCI allowed up to ₹10 lakh a day for merchant payments in selected verified categories from September 2025. Your bank's own limits page is the final word.

Does the Beeps Pay via UPI button need a merchant account?

It uses the UPI ID you add to your profile, and opens the customer's UPI app with that ID filled in. The money goes to that account, and Beeps takes no fee or cut. The button is on Pro, ₹299 a year. Which category the payment counts in is decided by your UPI account, not by the button.
