Do NFC business cards work on iPhone and Android?
The short answer is yes - with one iPhone rule to remember and a few Android budget exceptions worth knowing.
NFC business cards work on iPhone XS and every later iPhone. With the screen on, hold the card near the top back, tap the notification, and the profile opens in Safari - no app needed. On Android, Samsung, OnePlus, Pixel and most mid-range-plus models work the same way; some budget Redmi, Poco and Realme variants ship without NFC. The printed QR on every card covers every other phone.

iPhone XS and later: it just works
Since the iPhone XS (2018), iPhones read NFC tags in the background. Apple's note is short: "iPhone XS and later support background tag reading." The other person does not install an app or turn anything on. With their screen on, your card near the top of their phone brings up a notification, and tapping it opens your profile - after unlocking, if the phone was locked.
The top is the spot because that is where Apple tells people to hold the phone for NFC payments: "Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader." A card reads best in the same place.
What the iPhone acts on is a link. It reads the first web address on the tag and opens it in Safari when no app claims it, which is exactly what a Beeps Card holds. So "does it work on iPhone?" has a clean answer: yes, out of the box.

Hold it flat against the upper part of the back. Apple’s own advice for NFC is to hold the top of the iPhone near the reader.
A notification appears
With the screen on, a banner appears with no app open. The iPhone only looks for tags in the background while it is in use, so a dark screen reads nothing.

The link on the card opens in Safari, like any website. If the phone is locked, it asks to unlock first.
The visitor acts
Save the contact, call, WhatsApp, browse the catalog or pay via UPI right from the page.
When an iPhone won't read the card
The screen has to be on: the iPhone reads tags in the background only when it is in use. Apple also lists times when background reading is off even with the display on:
- The phone has not been unlocked since it was switched on.
- An app is already scanning for NFC tags.
- Apple Pay Wallet is open.
- The camera is in use. If the other person has the camera open to scan your QR code, the tap will not register until they close it - or they can simply scan.
- Airplane mode is on.

NFC is standard on mid-range and premium Androids. The honest caveat is the budget tier - some variants ship without it.

Five reasons a tap fails - and the fix
Thick or metal-backed case
Metal absorbs the NFC field before it reaches the chip. Fix: tap the card directly against the phone, or use a thinner case.
Card sitting in a metal holder
A metal card sleeve or a stack pressed against keys blocks the signal. Fix: take the card out before tapping.
NFC switched off
On Android the NFC switch can be off (Settings > search "NFC"). iPhones have no switch for reading cards; the list below covers the times an iPhone stops reading.
Holding the wrong spot
On an iPhone the spot is the top of the back. Android phones vary by model. Fix: move the card slowly across the back until something appears.
Screen off or locked
Android phones usually look for NFC tags only while the screen is unlocked. An iPhone reads with the screen on, then asks to unlock before opening the link. Fix: wake and unlock the phone, then tap again.

No NFC at all? The QR has it covered.

Compatibility questions
Do NFC business cards work on iPhone X, 8 or older iPhones?
Not in the background. Apple lists background tag reading - the notification that appears with no app open - for the iPhone XS and later. Older iPhones need a tag-reading app, if they can read tags at all. The QR code printed on every Beeps Card opens the same profile on any of them.

Does the other person need internet for the profile to load?
Yes. The tap itself needs no connection, but the profile is a web page, so it loads over mobile data or Wi-Fi like any other site.
Will tapping install anything on the receiver’s phone?
No. The tap opens a website in the browser. Nothing installs, nothing pairs, and no account is needed on the receiving side.
Does an NFC card work with NFC turned off on the phone?
Not by tap - the radio has to be on to read the chip. On phones where NFC is missing or switched off, the printed QR code opens the same profile from the camera.
Can I read a Beeps Card with an Apple Watch or other wearables?
Rely on the phone. Apple lists its tag-reading framework, Core NFC, for iPhone and iPad software, not for Apple Watch. Treat the phone as the reader and the QR code as the fallback.
